13. Achieving work life balance by delegating to a policy

Coaching

People who have work life balance can sometimes be described as being "ruthless" about their time.

To be "ruthless" they develop policies that work for them. In order to spend their time the way they feel they must, they are slavish in adhering to their policies.

People can develop personally relevant policies in the three components of their life. Here are some examples.

    Professionally
  • Will return phone calls after lunch
  • Will look through mail at end of day
  • Will not answer phone until 11a.m.
  • Will plan tomorrow before leaving today
    With family
  • Home for dinner
  • Sunday morning with children
  • Tuesday night is date night
    Personally
  • Monday, Wednesday, Saturday exercise
  • No TV after dinner
  • Read one book a month
  • Listen to opera in car

Mentoring

What are some policies you might decide to put in place so that you can manage your time better?

In the left hand column of the following chart are a number of work life balance policies. As you look at them consider how you could apply them and then type your ideas into the right hand column.

Work life balance policies How I could implement this policy
Will have dinner with my family most nights
  • Will get one hour of exercise three times each week
  • Will have a "relationship building date" one night each week
  • Will implement a "won't do list"
  • Will focus on the few truly important tasks
  • Will have a plan for everyday
  • Will spend time with friends away from family and work

    Save and review
Review your responses, then save this module in your records to retrieve, review and redo later.

    Download full workshop
On the home page of each workshop, you will find the "Download full workshop" icon, which lets you save all modules in that specific workshop at once. All the modules are contained in a single, navigable PDF file.

Downloading and saving all modules onto your computer or onto a disk allows you to access individual modules more quickly and easily than having to access each module individually. It also helps you quickly browse through the entire workshop content, providing you with an overview of how the modules relate to each other and which ones can benefit you the most. This option is most useful to those planning to complete numerous modules in a specific workshop.

    Evaluate yourself
The online COACHING CENTRE is a self-teaching and self-evaluation tool. For feedback, consider reviewing your responses with a colleague or mentor. Look for opportunities to test what you have learned. Redo the module in the future, and compare responses from the two sessions to "test" what you have learned in the interim.
