12. Achieving work life balance by focusing on what's important

Coaching

Pareto's law, the 80/20 principle, describes an often seen phenomenon. It is useful in considering a long term perspective. Here are some common situations.

  • 80% of problems come from 20% of sources
  • 80% of your revenue come from 20% of your clients
  • 80% of your success comes from 20% of your efforts
  • 80% of your satisfaction comes from 20% of your activities

What this means is that a few sources contribute to the majority of results. Satisfaction will be more readily or easily achieved once those few key sources are identified.

Here are some examples of uses of time that are valuable and not so valuable.

    Valuable
  • Planning
  • Advanced preparation
  • Exercise
  • Relationship building
  • Prevention
  • Rejuvenation
    Not so valuable
  • Low impact, easy to do work
  • Trivia; being busy for busy sake
  • Looking at junk mail
  • Many phone calls
  • Many "escape" activities
  • Some meetings
  • Watching television

Mentoring

Let's see if this can apply to you. What 20% of your activities contribute to 80% of your satisfaction ? Which are the one's you ought to spend most time on? Fill in the following chart to help you focus on what is most important to you.

    Save and review
Review your responses, then save this module in your records to retrieve, review and redo later.

    Download full workshop
On the home page of each workshop, you will find the "Download full workshop" icon, which lets you save all modules in that specific workshop at once. All the modules are contained in a single, navigable PDF file.

Downloading and saving all modules onto your computer or onto a disk allows you to access individual modules more quickly and easily than having to access each module individually. It also helps you quickly browse through the entire workshop content, providing you with an overview of how the modules relate to each other and which ones can benefit you the most. This option is most useful to those planning to complete numerous modules in a specific workshop.

    Evaluate yourself
The online COACHING CENTRE is a self-teaching and self-evaluation tool. For feedback, consider reviewing your responses with a colleague or mentor. Look for opportunities to test what you have learned. Redo the module in the future, and compare responses from the two sessions to "test" what you have learned in the interim.
