8. Managing stress by letting go of unhelpful beliefs

Coaching

Often, in order to cope with difficult environments, people have to identify and let go of a belief or an attitude that is holding them back. These beliefs or attitudes may have once been appropriate but are no longer. Taking the time to notice and understand our unhelpful beliefs can prove very beneficial.

Here are a few examples of unhelpful beliefs and their potential consequences. They, of course, don't all apply to everyone.

I can't disappoint others (the belief)

  • " A "never say no" mentality (the consequence)

  • I have to do it all

  • " No time for myself

  • They can't manage without me

  • " Feelings of resentment

  • They'll think I'm weak if I ask for help

  • " Don't ask for help, especially directions

  • I'm a fraud

  • " Hides mistakes, withdraws

  • When identifying, understanding and letting go of unhelpful beliefs, it's important to also determine what the replacement belief will be and to become comfortable with that new belief.

    Mentoring

Think about recent situations where you felt stressed. Examine your thinking in these situations. Try to see where beliefs or attitudes may have contributed to your discomfort. Then imagine how you might change your thinking to help you feel more confident.

    First stressful situation:

  • Contributing belief or attitude:

  • Revised belief that will help me feel more confident:

  • Second stressful situation:

  • Contributing belief or attitude:

  • Revised belief that will help me feel more confident:

  • Third stressful situation:

  • Contributing belief or attitude:

  • Revised belief that will help me feel more confident:

    Save and review
Review your responses, then save this module in your records to retrieve, review and redo later.

    Download full workshop
On the home page of each workshop, you will find the "Download full workshop" icon, which lets you save all modules in that specific workshop at once. All the modules are contained in a single, navigable PDF file.

Downloading and saving all modules onto your computer or onto a disk allows you to access individual modules more quickly and easily than having to access each module individually. It also helps you quickly browse through the entire workshop content, providing you with an overview of how the modules relate to each other and which ones can benefit you the most. This option is most useful to those planning to complete numerous modules in a specific workshop.

    Evaluate yourself
The online COACHING CENTRE is a self-teaching and self-evaluation tool. For feedback, consider reviewing your responses with a colleague or mentor. Look for opportunities to test what you have learned. Redo the module in the future, and compare responses from the two sessions to "test" what you have learned in the interim.
