2. Managing stress by overcoming feelings of guilt

Coaching

Many people feel guilty about certain events, happenings or circumstances in their lives.

Have you ever wondered what guilty feelings actually are? Consider this.

                                                    Beliefs + Action = Guilt

Here are some examples of the sources of guilt and examples of potentially of balancing acts.

Examples: Balancing Acts
Belief: Should go to church/synagogue.
Action: Don't go
Result: Guilt Go sometimes

Belief: Parents deserve respect
Action: Mad at dad Remember that parents are human
Result: Guilt Talk it out with him

Belief: Should work late to get ahead
Action: Schedule personal activities Change belief to should work smart to get ahead
Result: Guilt Look for key opportunities when working late will be most beneficial

You can only feel guilty if you have a certain belief and take a certain action that makes the belief true. For example.

  • Belief: should have dinner with family every night.
  • Action: work late, missed dinner
  • Result: guilt

The belief that you should have dinner with your family combined with the action of working late produces the guilt.

The way to overcome guilt is to change your beliefs and/or your actions. Reconsider the above example with a revised belief.

  • New belief: want to eat dinner with your family most nights
  • Existing action: worked late, missed dinner
  • Result: no guilt

Alternatively, you could change your action.

  • Existing belief: should have dinner with family every night.
  • New action: go home for dinner and then go back to work.
  • Result: no guilt

Mentoring

Indicate a situation where you have guilt. Hint: guilty feelings often start with "I should" statements:

    One of your situations
  • My existing belief:
  • + My existing action:
  • Result: guilt
Can you change your belief to reduce your guilt?
  • New belief:
  • + Existing action:
  • Result: no guilt
Or you change your action to reduce your guilt?
  • Existing belief:
  • New action:
  • Result: no guilt

Save and review
Review your responses, then save this module in your records to retrieve, review and redo later.

Download full workshop
On the home page of each workshop, you will find the "Download full workshop" icon, which lets you save all modules in that specific workshop at once. All the modules are contained in a single, navigable PDF file.

Downloading and saving all modules onto your computer or onto a disk allows you to access individual modules more quickly and easily than having to access each module individually. It also helps you quickly browse through the entire workshop content, providing you with an overview of how the modules relate to each other and which ones can benefit you the most. This option is most useful to those planning to complete numerous modules in a specific workshop.

Evaluate yourself
The online COACHING CENTRE is a self-teaching and self-evaluation tool. For feedback, consider reviewing your responses with a colleague or mentor. Look for opportunities to test what you have learned. Redo the module in the future, and compare responses from the two sessions to "test" what you have learned in the interim.
